Why Going to School in Pajamas is Right For You

October 24, 2012 by Allanah Canalija

College typically encompasses some of the best years in a young person’s life: why the dorms, the shared bathrooms, the terrible food, the overpriced books, the exorbitant tuition, the parties, the hangovers. Ah, what a time. Who doesn’t remember the joys of being a ninth year senior? But, this is not for everyone. Are you thinking about going to college but feel like you don’t have the time? Or maybe you’re trying to earn a specialized degree that isn’t offered in your area? Or you already have a job and want to earn a better paying position with an advanced degree? Today, the advancement of online technology makes going to college as simple as waking up and turning on your computer. Here are some of the benefits:

4 Tips for Staying Organized in College

October 21, 2012 by Melanie Bayon

What is the Real Unemployment Rate? One thing about college is guaranteed: When you start, you’re going to be inundated with paperwork, emails, names, phone numbers, and a million other things you’ll never remember. Here’s the good news: You don’t HAVE to remember them, because we’re going to tell you how to stay organized in college.

1.) Keep Hard Copies of Things that Matter

Use a daily planner to keep organizedThis includes (but is not limited to) emails and any work that is submitted online. Technology is great, but it isn’t foolproof. If you email your professor your essay and he notifies you after the due date that he never got it, in addition to forwarding him the email from you “sent” folder, provide him with a hard copy of the email you originally sent.

This is also beneficial to do when you’re dealing with money online. Bank statements, student loan information and receipts, resumés, etc. should all be in your possession in hard copy, in addition to floating around somewhere in your computer.

2.) Organize Important College Paperwork in a File Cabinet

All of that important (and sometimes confidential) paperwork looks fantastic in a messy pile on your computer desk, right? Wrong! It’s also unsafe and could be damaging should you start to lose track of things. Clearly labeled file folders will keep your information secure and organized, just as you need it. This is perfect for receipts, scheduling information, student loan documents, and all of those other hard copies you’re going to start to keep. Why Accounting Is A Safe Bet

September 21, 2012 by Jorgen Rex Olson

Accounting-

In today’s economy, many people are looking for college majors that will give them a good shot at employment when they graduate.  While many schools talk about the inherent value of an education, few students have the luxury of spending years at a private university exploring various arts degrees.  In actuality, most students need to spend as little time and money in school as possible, then take their degree and get a well-paying job.

If you happen to be in this situation, it might be time to consider a degree in accounting.  Accounting is a solidly growing career field, and it is projected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to have  190,700 new job openings from 2010 through 2020.  This degree is offered at a variety of colleges and universities, is relatively easy to obtain, and offers a relatively secure and easy path to a job after graduation.

An Education in Accounting

AccountingTo become an accountant generally requires a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Accounting degrees are offered at nearly every public college and university, as they are one of the most popular degree programs offered in America.  This makes it easy to find a program that is located near your work and home.  In addition, the popularity of the program makes it easy to transfer credits between schools.  Classes are offered by many schools at night and on weekends and are also available online.  This makes accounting an ideal program for anyone who needs to work while attending school, or who is unsure if they will have to move in the middle of their program.

Furthermore, accounting programs do not require a lot of prerequisites, class time, or background knowledge. While some basic math and reasoning ability is required, accounting programs do not require higher-level math or science skills.  This makes it a good program for people who have been out of an academic environment for a while to jump into. Now that you are nearing the end of your MBBS, you need to start looking at which field you should go into. Reflecting on your expertise and natural talents is an excellent place to start. However, you should also choose something that you find interesting, and remember that looking at the most exciting recent medical advances may help you decide. We will explore the top five fields you should consider.

Top 5 Fields to Consider After MBBS

1) Cardiology

Cardiology, Stethoscope

If you go into cardiology after MBBS, your work will focus on disorders of the heart. You will diagnose and treat a range of congenital heart defects, including malfunctioning heart valves, heart rhythm problems, and abnormalities in the septum. You will also design rehabilitation programs after major cardiac events, and treat patients who are in heart failure. If cardiology and surgery appeal to you, then you can choose to become a cardiac surgeon, which will involve performing open heart surgery on the heart and the body’s major blood vessels. Now is an excellent time to go into cardiology or cardiac surgery, as recent advances include an inventive new method of freezing heart tissue that can cause rhythm disorders, as well as the exciting development of non-surgical valve replacement procedures. Is A Bachelor’s Degree Still Worth It?

September 14, 2012 by Jorgen Rex Olson

The Price of Higher Education: Student Loan Debt

These days, it seems inevitable that any discussion of the economy will include a discussion of student loan debt. And with good reason – according to U.S. News and World Report, the average college student will graduate with over $25,000 of student loan debt. This is the highest level of debt in the nation’s history, and cumulative student debt has surpassed credit card debt for the first time ever. The high cost of getting a bachelor’s degree has caused many to speculate as to whether or not going to college is still a worthwhile investment.

The price of higher education: student loan debtAccording to Yahoo Education, a U.S. Census Bureau report stated that more than 30 percent of adults ages 25 and older had at least a bachelor’s degree, the highest level of degree-holders ever. And a Department of Labor earnings report for 2011 showed that workers with a bachelor’s degree earned a median income of $1,158 per week, while those with only a high school diploma earned $641 a week. Yet the unemployment rate for recent college graduates with a four-year degree is 8.9 percent, higher than the national average. This may be because many employers are seeking to cut costs by downsizing or outsourcing many entry-level jobs overseas. Therefore, it is not at all uncommon to find young people with bachelor’s degrees working at Starbucks or waiting tables. [Read more…] about Is A Bachelor’s Degree Still Worth It?
