Five Unusual Business Ideas

October 12, 2012 by Guest Contributor

Unusual Business Ideas-

Have you ever watched television infomercials when you can’t sleep, wondering why you didn’t think of that? Some business ideas seem so startlingly simple after we’re presented with them that we can’t believe that people are actually making money from them. Here are five of the most unusual business ideas that people have turned into real money-makers:

1.Cleaning Skeletons

unusual business ideasWhether you know a hunter or a science teacher, you may have wondered how those skulls and bones that they keep got so clean. The answer to your question is this: Dermestid beetles. A few innovative people across the country have packed these little beetles into large boxes or converted freezers in their garages. Once a head or body part is shipped to these people, they place the item into the box of beetles that, in turn, clean the part until nothing is left but clean bone.

2.eBay

eBayIt may not be unusual, but people are making very lucrative salaries on eBay. It may seem unique to you, who can’t seem to sell a T-shirt on the site, but people who have an eye for things that sell have turned this into a career. Spending their weekends scouring auctions and garage sales, people are buying things for pennies and making hundreds of dollars on the popular auction site.

3.Crime Scene Clean-Up

It’s definitely not a job for everyone, but [Read more…] about Five Unusual Business Ideas

Was Jack Welch Right on Twitter? Are Unemployment Numbers “Unbelievable”?

October 9, 2012 by Tim McMahon

Jack Welch on Twitter: Unbelievable Jobs Numbers

Unemployment Numbers “Surprisingly Good”-

On Friday, October 5th, just two days after the first Presidential debate the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the unemployment data for September, which were “surprisingly good”. The experts were not expecting such a large drop. The Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.3% in July and had fallen to 8.1% in August and then the unemployment numbers for September came in at a shocking 7.8%.

Upon hearing these numbers, Jack Welch sent a Tweet from his Twitter account that has enraged Democrats. He said,

Jack Welch

  • @jack_welch
Unbelievable jobs numbers..these Chicago guys will do anything..can’t debate so change numbers.

Jack Welch has an amazing resume,  the former CEO of General Electric, a best-selling author, a lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the founder of the Jack Welch Management Institute, etc.

Media Pounces on Jack Welch for Twitter Comments

But of course, that didn’t stop the Media from pouncing all over him. Huffington Post called his Tweet “Demented” and of course, the White House dismissed him as “ludicrous”.

“That’s a ludicrous comment. No serious person believes that the Bureau of Labor Statistics manipulates its statistics,” said Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

I don’t know where Mr. Krueger has been over the last 20 years, but John Williams of Shadowstats.com has made quite a name for himself disbelieving BLS numbers for some time now. And we have published several articles about how the Unemployment numbers don’t match up with the Employment numbers. See: Employment vs. Unemployment and Is the Government Fudging Unemployment Numbers?  We published both of these articles long before the Presidential debate and Jack Welch’s Tweet.

As a matter of fact, James Dale Davidson founder of the National Taxpayers Union and author of Blood in the Streets, The Sovereign Individual, and most recently Brazil Is the New America: How Brazil Offers Upward Mobility in a Collapsing World wrote many years ago that he believed that Bill Clinton was fudging BLS numbers. So accusations of BLS fudging are nothing new.

As a matter of fact, it might be [Read more…] about Was Jack Welch Right on Twitter? Are Unemployment Numbers “Unbelievable”?

Will Big Bird Lose His Job?

October 7, 2012 by Tim McMahon

In the presidential debates in Colorado on Wednesday Mitt Romney said, that although he likes Big Bird (and debate moderator Jim Lehrer),  if elected he plans on cutting the $400 million subsidy that goes to PBS. PBS of course is the corporate home of Sesame Street and loveable “Big Bird“. Since that statement the Democrats and the blogosphere has errupted with crys against the big mean man who wants to kill big bird.

Big Bird Won’t Lose Job

will Big bird lose his jobBut according to Sherrie Westin, executive vice president for Sesame Workshop, Sesame Street actually receives very little funding from PBS anyway.

About 12% of PBS’ revenue comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. For 2015 Congress has budgeted $445 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The remainder of the funding, as they are so fond of saying, “Comes from Viewers like you…”

PBS CEO Paula Kerger  said PBS too will be just fine, as it too isn’t funded directly by the government. “In fact, the money that comes from the government into the Corporation for Public Broadcasting goes to our member stations.”

One blogger put it this way… “I think the fact that taking government funding away from PBS will not hurt it is kind of Romney’s point. Isn’t that basically the definition of unnecessary spending? “

Big Bird is a “Cash Cow”

The show is very profitable in its own right. Big Bird probably has more licensing deals than Michael Jordan… he’s a virtual “cash cow”.   So don’t worry Big Bird will still have a job if Romney is elected.

On the day after the debate Big Bird posted on his Twitter page, “Big Bird: My bed time is usually 7:45, but I was really tired yesterday and fell asleep at 7! Did I miss anything last night?”

Did you even know that Big Bird had a Twitter page?

The Role Of an Umbrella Insurance Policy In Your Organization

October 4, 2012 by Rachel Oda

An Umbrella Policy is Full Coverage Insurance

Liability is a big buzzword these days, and there are very few other words that make business people cringe and fearful at the same time. As the world seemingly gets more and more litigious, liability takes on a whole new meaning. These days, there is no predicting what kind of lawsuits will be filed and the amount of money a judge will deem appropriate as a reward for that lawsuit. Because of this, umbrella insurance has become much more common than it has been in the past. Sometimes it is referred to as “Full Coverage Insurance“.

There was a time when umbrella insurance policies were only a luxury of the well-to-do, but that is not quite the story these days. In fact, it has become a norm for organizations, Small Businesses, corporations, and other associations to take out their own individual umbrella insurance policies to fill in any gaps left by other insurance policies.

Umbrella Insurance PolicyIn short, an umbrella insurance policy is just like a normal insurance policy- in that it protects businesses and individuals from risk- but, it has a much higher liability payout limit. Most regular insurance policies will only agree to cover a person’s liability- also known as risk- up to a certain point, but an umbrella insurance policy lifts the ceiling on that limit. The other defining characteristic of an umbrella insurance policy is that it will cover all types of insurance, from car insurance to home insurance and beyond.

An umbrella insurance policy will add a relatively small additional cost to a normal insurance policy, but- if a person ever finds themselves in a costly litigious situation- it could end up saving you a boatload of money. Some studies done by various insurance companies and professionals have concluded that an umbrella insurance policy can end up saving a person anywhere from $1 million to $5 million if that person does indeed have to go to [Read more…] about The Role Of an Umbrella Insurance Policy In Your Organization

How to Land a Temp to Permanent Job

October 1, 2012 by Guest Contributor

A temp job helps you make money and gain experience.  Such work can also help you build a solid resume.  If you perform well in your temp work, the employer may hire you or consider you for a future permanent position.

What if the temp job requires you to work in different departments of the company?

Temp to permanent jobGreat, you have even brighter temp to permanent job prospects.  It’s because you can get hands-on experience in diverse areas and the opportunity to work for (and thus impress) several different managers who may have the need and authority to hire someone.

With a temp job, you’ll develop references to give to another employer, if the temp-to-perm avenue doesn’t work out.  Further as a person with skill and experience, you will be the first choice for the temp agency for future temp work.

Tips to Landing a Temp to Permanent Job

1) Begin your Work on Time:  Punctuality gives you a high grade on the temp score card.  If for some reason, however, you are unavoidably late to work:  Did you miss the train? Or, are you stuck in a traffic jam?  Call your temp agency and the company and inform them of your situation.  Of course, you should also tell them what time you will make it to the office.  As far who you should call first, always follow the instructions given to you by [Read more…] about How to Land a Temp to Permanent Job

Keeping Worker’s Compensation Insurance Affordable

September 30, 2012 by Jorgen Rex Olson

How Business Owners Can Keep Worker’s Compensation Insurance Affordable –

With the recent hits to the economy, changes in law, and other sorts of changes in the workplace, costs of maintaining workers compensation insurance for companies, and in particular for small businesses, are rising unpredictably.  Some of this can be caused by your state’s assigned risk pool, some by the increase of high-risk situations, and some by other factors.  However, there are things that you as a business owner can do to help reduce the rates of workers compensation insurance for your company.

1. Preventative Measures

Worker's Compensation InsuranceFirst, there are some preventative measures you can take in the area of safety that may help to reduce workers comp insurance rates in the future.  Whether you’ve had problems with worker safety in the past or not, being safe certainly doesn’t hurt.  Depending on your line of work, you may want to look into safety precautions at workstations, or even establish a group to keep an eye on workplace safety within your organization.  The more you can reduce the risk of accidents, the better you’ll make out in the long run.

2. Experience Rating

You’ll also want to check out your experience rating or experience modifier.  This compares your claims history to that of other organizations in your industry.  You can check out your rating by looking at worksheets from the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI).  Make sure that your rating is accurate, as your rating could save you as much as 45% on your Compensation Insurance.

3. Relationship

Establish a good relationship with a healthcare provider.  Sometimes you can use managed medical care to treat your workers.  The more quickly you can get injured workers back to work, the better it is for your organization, and the better [Read more…] about Keeping Worker’s Compensation Insurance Affordable

Job Success Tips for College Students

September 25, 2012 by Tim McMahon

How can College Students become Job-ready?

Are you in your junior or senior year of college?  Prepare yourself for the job market now and don’t let the recession bother you.  As a college student you might not find too many jobs.  But, you can build a strong foundation for a future career.

Here are some tips for college students to lay a foundation while in college.

How can College Students be Successful in the Job Market?

job successA challenge for many college students is gaining experience.  Training new employees, is expensive so companies often prefer to hire people who have the work experience, if they are available.  So, how does a college student find a job?

Attitude Goes a Long Way

College students who have the motivation and who can work hard and smart can overcome the “experience” block. One key factor that employers look at is attitude. Often a future employer will choose the candiate with the stronger work ethic over one with more experience or better credentials. Become a hard worker, don’t expect to laze around and get paid for it. Show energy, enthusiasm for the job, a friendly attitude and be willing to learn. You can’t fake this, it must come from within. If you enjoy what you are doing you will have the right attitude. Don’t think of work as a drudgery that you have to do so you will have money to live on weekends. Think of it as an opportunity to do interesting stuff, meet interesting people and learn new things.

Gain Skills and Experience

Make the best use of your junior and senior years to gain [Read more…] about Job Success Tips for College Students
