You Enjoy Helping People

Every day, across the nation, people have their lives or the lives of loved ones destroyed because of criminal activity. Bringing criminals to justice helps give solace to those affected by crime. Then there is the other end of the spectrum—the criminals themselves. If helping people is your passion in life, there can be nothing more powerful than directly playing a role in the rehabilitation of someone who has gone down the wrong path.

How Much Should a Commute Influence Future Employment?

September 26, 2017 by Guest Contributor

There are many considerations to take into account when looking for a new job and salary is obviously a major factor since you need to be able to afford to live. Location is definitely another major consideration. When both of these factors are taken together they can cause a “make or break” situation. Surveys by the U.S. Census Bureau have found that even though California is one of the richest states in the country it has the highest poverty level due to its higher cost of living.

In addition to salary and location, another point that many people forget to look at is the commute. This is a major expense many people tend to ignore, that could really end up changing the way you see and do your job. Here are some things to think about when it comes to future employment and the commute.

Vehicles Cost Money

The first major cost that’s related to a commute is the cost of a car, truck, or SUV. These modern-day chariots cost many thousands of dollars initially and are definitely not cheap to maintain either. There is also the need for insurance and maintenance, which adds to the overall cost of operating a vehicle. A 2015 article by AAA says that the average cost of owning a car is just under $9,000 per year. This is one reason some people prefer city life where they can rely on public transportation (you can buy a lot of subway tokens for $9,000). If you live close enough to work you can “Bicycle Commute” and save a ton of money.

Gas Costs Money

Another major expense that arises from driving to and from a job is [Read more…] about How Much Should a Commute Influence Future Employment?

You can’t just dive into the subject matter you’re most passionate about, the real world requires you to give your career choice careful consideration. In fact, many students cannot decide on a single, strongest interest to begin with, and more often than not, they find themselves stuck at the prospect of choosing a major, let alone a career.

The awareness that your entire professional path could be decided by this single choice doesn’t make things any easier, so before you take the plunge, here are the most crucial factors to consider so that you can make the most of your academic education, and choose the right direction.

Explore Your Interests

High-school alone gives you a whole range of subjects to explore and discover which areas are your strongest in terms of ability as well as interest. Data Entry as a Career Choice

May 2, 2017 by Guest Contributor

If you enjoy typing and are able to type relatively quickly, you might want  to try your luck with a data entry job. It is a wide field that provides a great opportunity to learn different things and test your typing skills. However, don’t get fooled by the numerous data entry work from home scams and examine your opportunities carefully, especially if you lack experience.

Although not every work-at-home job is a way to engage you in illegal actions, the fact is that even legitimate offers are paid less than working from an office. Also, you must be informed about the data entry range, as transcription jobs are sometimes presented as part of a data entry service.

There is a lot to think about before applying for a data entry position. Therefore, avoid pointless job offerings and find a suitable data entry job by approaching this area of business armed with the proper knowledge. [Read more…] about Data Entry as a Career Choice

Housing Ace: 5 Ways to Prepare for a Job in Real Estate

April 6, 2017 by Tim McMahon

Being a real estate agent can be a really great career for the right person. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the median salary for a Real Estate agent is $45,610 per year. Real estate brokers and sales agents help clients buy, sell, and rent properties. Although brokers and agents do similar work, brokers are licensed to manage their own real estate businesses. Sales agents must work with a real estate broker. Generally, you must be an agent for a while before becoming a broker.

According to the BLS, “Brokers and agents can represent either the buyer or the seller in a transaction. Buyers’ brokers and agents meet with clients to understand what they are looking for in a property and how much they can afford. Sellers’ brokers and agents meet with clients to help them decide how much to ask for and to convince them that the agent or broker can find them a qualified buyer.

Real estate brokers and sales agents must be knowledgeable about the real estate market in their area. To match properties to clients’ needs, they should be familiar with local communities, including knowing the crime information and the proximity to schools and shopping. Brokers and agents also must stay current on financing options; government programs; types of available mortgages; and real estate, zoning, and fair housing laws.”

The hours are unusual since you may be showing homes when other people are off of work. Since you work on commission you may work for long periods without getting paid and then receive a large paycheck all at once. Some years are better than others depending on the overall market in your area. You must be self-motivated and a “people person”. But for the right individual this can be an excellent career choice. Dangerous Work: Five Jobs With the Most Risk

Workplace safety is often taken for granted, considering that the majority of jobs have virtually nonexistent injury rates. But on the other hand, it can be appalling to look at some of the hazards faced in certain other workplaces today. Although new technology is constantly improving workplace safety, several occupations in particular remain quite hazardous.

Highway Construction

Construction workers in general face numerous workplace hazards, but combine the usual risks, with vehicles speeding past just feet from the work site, and you end up with one of the highest workplace injury rates in the country. Authorities have implemented measures such as lane closures, and stiff penalties for speeding in construction zones, which have been met with mixed success at keeping highway construction workers safe. 1.6% of all car accidents happen in construction zones and more than 20,000 workers are injured in road construction work zones each year resulting in over 500 fatalities a year.

A Head for Figures: Working in the Financial Industry

October 15, 2013 by Guest Contributor

When you’re at school there are some lessons you love, and some that you detest. A lot of people can’t wait for PE so they can get out of the classroom and have a run-around, while others may look forward to the days when they can experiment with blowing things up in Chemistry class. Math, however, is one of those lessons that goes either way – you either really enjoy complex equations, or you hate them and you’d rather be doing ANYTHING else.

Jobs that Use MathThere are a variety of careers that require all types of math from theoretical math to applied math to simple arithmetic. The finance industry generally requires “applied math” rather than more complex theoretical math or even Calculus. The major exceptions would be Actuaries, Economists, and Statisticians which might require higher levels of math.

Actuaries

Actuaries analyze the financial costs of risk and uncertainty. They use mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to assess the risk that an event will occur and to help businesses (generally insurance companies) develop policies that minimize the cost of that risk. The employment of actuaries in the insurance industry is expected to grow by [Read more…] about A Head for Figures: Working in the Financial Industry

Becoming a Home Health Care Administrator

December 19, 2012 by Andrina Cagandahan

Patients prefer home care over an extended stay in a hospital or nursing home, and for the elderly, home care can actually be the more affordable option. Home health care agencies provide skilled nurses and medical workers to oversee older patients who need constant care and may be approaching the end of their lives. They also serve people with severe disabilities or patients who are recovering from serious accidents. Home health agencies also employ administrators to be in charge of both the business and the patient wellness aspects of the company. Not every health care administrator works at a hospital – some of them specialize in the best ways to provide this very personal home health care. Here are the steps to pursuing health care administration as a career.

1. Researching Health Care Administration

The duties of a home health care administrator can vary wildly based on the kind of agency they work for. The first step in getting involved in the home health care industry is finding out which kinds of agencies are near you and which services they provide. Some agencies specialize in hospice care, which can mean involving a person’s family in their end-of-life treatment. Others provide help with dressing and bathing for the elderly or disabled. Some agencies specialize in physical therapy, and others provide nurses who can administer medications and help patients with their diet. Every kind of home health care has different licensing requirements, and it’s important to know what kind of education or certification you need to pursue.

2. Gaining Health Care Experience

Before you can become the boss, you need to have a good grasp of medical practices. Many health administrators are also registered nurses, and even more have spent years working in hospitals and interacting with patients. Even if your knowledge and experience lean more towards the business side of things, you might want to look for work as a healthcare administrative assistant. This is a valuable way to [Read more…] about Becoming a Home Health Care Administrator
