Is Your Job Making You Sick?

September 21, 2023 by Tim McMahon

Ways You Can Tell and What to Do About It

Job making you sickIt’s not uncommon to feel a bit stressed or burnt out at work, but what happens when your job begins to hurt your mental and physical well-being? This can happen more easily than you might think, and it’s essential to recognize the signs early, so you can take action before things get worse.

In this post, we look at some of the telltale signs that your job is making you mentally or physically sick and offer some practical advice on what you can do to improve your situation.

The Mental Toll

You Feel Constantly Fatigued

Working long hours, feeling unfulfilled, and experiencing stress daily can all take a massive toll on your energy levels. This often leads to feeling physically exhausted, which can, in turn, exacerbate your mental state. If you’re feeling drained and find it challenging to muster the energy to focus on anything outside of work, then it might be time to re-evaluate your work-life balance.

You’re Irritable and Short-Tempered

Your job is likely to take up a significant amount of your time and energy, which can lead to feelings of frustration. This often causes irritability and a shorter temper than usual, which can create conflict with colleagues and even cause problems at home. If you find yourself struggling with your emotions and feeling overly sensitive or defensive, it could be a sign that your job is taking a significant toll on your mental health. How to Get a Job with No Experience

December 24, 2020 by Tim McMahon

Finding a job without experience is a common “Catch 22”  or “no-win” type problem. But in real life, you don’t need to despair because everyone has been in this same situation early in their career and obviously many have succeeded despite this handicap. So all that remains is to discover how they did it and follow their example.

This is such a common problem that this question appears in many forms on Quora:

Be Reliable and Seek Apprenticeships

Martin Gainty says: That he runs a remodeling business and hires part-day-laborers all the time. “If the person does what they say they will do and manage to be sober and on-time” he would be happy to give them a reference to the local master-contractors “who are ALWAYS looking for apprentices”. He says electrical and plumbing apprentices are in high demand.

So the first tip is to be reliable and seek a job as an apprentice which will give you the experience you need.

Find a Good Job by Updating Your Resume

December 10, 2019 by Tim McMahon

If you’re in the process of hunting for a job and haven’t had any luck getting an interview, the problem could be your resume. Here are some ways you can update your resume to find a much better job.

Quantify More

Using numbers to quantify your achievements where possible, adds more substance to any resume. For example, instead of just saying “managed employees and brought on new clients,” you can instead state that you managed a team of eight employees and grew your company’s client base by 20%. You can also add numbers in a range or frequency to give your achievements more impact.

Give More Examples

How to Remain Productive During Your Time out of Work

May 20, 2019 by Tim McMahon

Whether you chose to leave your job or you were forced out, while you’re out of work, it’s likely that your productivity level will drop at some point or another. If you do find yourself suffering from this plight, fear not, as this is just your natural reaction to your day-to-day schedule undergoing such a drastic change. If your separation from your previous employer was involuntary then it is likely that you will suffer from depression as well, which will sap your energy and make it even more difficult to get your career back on track. No matter how big the motivation may be to stay in bed all day, don’t give in to this temptation. If you do, before long, you’ll find yourself falling behind the pace in your career.

Instead, you should seek to remain busy, productive and have a positive attitude, while you are unemployed. Remember this is an opportunity to change your life for the better. Here are a few things you can do to ensure this is the case:

Claim Whatever Money You Are Owed

It’s a lot easier to remain productive when you have some money in your pocket, even if it’s not the amount of money you are used to having at your disposal.

For one, having some cash to fall back on will allow you to venture wherever you need to go in your quest to get a job — you won’t need to worry about financial issues holding you back from attending interviews over the other side of town, for instance. With money in your pocket, you’ll also be able to invest in yourself by enrolling in courses that will better your chances of landing a job going forward.

No matter your reason for [Read more…] about How to Remain Productive During Your Time out of Work

Putting Your Best Foot Forward: How to Make Sure You’re a Good Candidate for Hire

March 26, 2019 by Guest Contributor

Applying for a new job can quickly become stressful and overwhelming when you are unsure of how to go about the process to increase your chances of receiving an additional interview request. When you want to put your best foot forward, there are a few tips and tricks to implement into the process of preparing for an upcoming job interview and filling out available applications.

Tweak Your Resume for Each Individual Position You Are Interested In

Submitting the same resume for each job you are interested in is not advisable, especially if each individual position requires different skills and talents. Always update your resume for each new application you intend to submit to increase your chances of getting noticed and receiving a follow-up email or phone call. Consider the skills, talents, and responsibilities of each position you are interested in to make the appropriate tweaks and changes to your resume prior to submitting your application.

The most important part of your resume is the initial profile that is at the top since it is the first thing a potential employer sees. It should be brief with only about 3 bullet points. The first bullet point should highlight your experience.

So if you are a CPA  it might look something like this: [Read more…] about Putting Your Best Foot Forward: How to Make Sure You’re a Good Candidate for Hire

Try to Appear Relaxed and Confident

Even if you feel nervous and not very confident as you start your job, it’s important to maintain an air of assurance. Your boss and coworkers may not take you as seriously if you exhibit excessive nervousness or a lack of confidence. Letting these feelings get the best of you might also cause you to make silly mistakes on the job. Maintaining good body posture and eye contact when you converse with people in the workplace can make you appear more in control. Excessive chatting, fidgeting and other nervous habits should be avoided.
