The “Great Recession” of 2008 put the retirement plans of many seniors on hold which resulted in fewer opportunities for millennials. But now, more than 10 years later, many of those seniors are thinking about retirement once again. So that should start creating opportunities for younger people. If you want a career that helps you grow, you need to know yourself. This includes understanding what your values are and assessing future goals. Here are some ways to find a career that will give you opportunities for growth.
Volunteer
When we get caught up in making enough to survive or in making more money we can lose sight of what is truly important. You may feel frustrated from not being able to earn enough money to live off of or because life is meaningless. Volunteering can lead to a paying job, teach valuable skills and impress employers. Maybe you’d like to help animals, advocate for the environment or teach children who live in poverty. You may also want to work for a company that donates to charity or encourages employees to volunteer. There are also non-profit organizations that hire people so you have the opportunity to help others while earning a living at the same time.
Search for Meaning
A life without meaning can be depressing. Unfortunately, one of the major problems with the welfare program is that it robs people of their opportunity to do something meaningful so they end up turning to drugs to fill the empty void of their life. The same holds true for people who feel their job has no meaning and is probably why many people who work at grocery stores and gas stations can be rude. The right career will help you fulfil not only your physical needs but your spiritual needs as well. Prayer is an important component of your spiritual journey but as the Bible says in James Chapter 2 “Faith without works is dead”. So finding a career that adds value to your life can help you feel useful, fulfilled, and content.
Be Yourself
A great career will help you be yourself. It’s important for the people around you to treat you like a human being. If you don’t feel like you belong at the company, this just means you need to find a place where you do belong. You can be positive and see this as an opportunity to move on. You don’t have to be a doctor in order to be happy. Just explore all of your options until you find a career that aligns with you and helps you be your best self.
Fits Your Goals
As Simon Sinek says in the video above, “Our careers, function on three levels. What we do, how we do it, and why we do it. These are the things that we think make us different or special compared to everyone else. But very few of us can clearly articulate why we do what we do. And I don’t mean to earn a living or provide for your family; those are results. By why, I mean what’s your purpose? What’s your cause? What’s your belief? And after I learned my why, I literally stopped telling people what I did and only started telling them what I believed. And not only was my passion restored, but my career and my life changed dramatically and took on an entirely new path with vastly more meaning.”
Figuring out your “why” is the key. This can help you put your thoughts in order to understand what you want to do with your life. If the career you’re in doesn’t take you where you want to go, then it will send you on a path you’ll likely regret. At first, you may need to take a job that isn’t necessarily where you want to ultimately be, but that is a step along the right path. For example, if you want to design your own video games, you might need to start as an intern or at an entry level position learning everything from game design to video game site monetization before you will be ready to start your own company. But before you head down that path you should know WHY you want to do WHAT you what you want to do.
The key to happiness in your career is to do something you find fulfilling not just a way to make money.
