When you are trying to construct a good resume, you need to make sure you are using your resume to speak to your skills and attributes and sell yourself to a new employer. The five ideas below are all designed to make your resume look better, and you need to be certain your resume features as many of these ideas as possible. Don’t be afraid to stand out.
One Page
It is definitely better to limit your resume to one page long. Today’s world is simply too busy for you to send out resumes that are several pages. When you getting ready to e-mail your resume, you need to make sure they are confined to one page. Unless you are applying for a high level management position, human resources people won’t take the time to read more than one page.
Use a Simple Font
Your resume must be printed in a font that is easy to read. You can find some lovely fonts online that you may enjoy, but you must think of the person who has to read it. People may not be as impressed as you are with a fancy font. And they may disregard your resume because they cannot read it … stick with Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri. Choose a simple design and organized format.
Use Less Categories
You do not want your resume to have many categories. It is better to simplify as much as possible. People who see all your education and training in one place have less to read, and those who see all your accomplishments and awards in one place can easily see how successful you have been. Don’t group your health information management degree program with accomplishments if it is a degree though. You want to be sure education and accomplishments are separated in some way.
Use Twelve Point Font
When you are sending a resume, it must be in twelve point font. People can tell when you have used anything else, and they will assume you do not understand basic business communications. Your headings can be fourteen point font, but everything else must be in a smaller font. Only bold necessary titles for better organization, and as a way to track the important parts easier.
Proofread
People often do not proofread their resumes because they think there is no way to mess up something so simple. The fact is, you will make mistakes as you constantly edit your resume. You need to check every part before you send it, and you should make sure it is updated regularly and proofread again.
When you want to send out a good resume, you must use the five points again to get to the front of the interview line. Use a simple format and make sure the biggest highlights are easy to notice. You should be able to find a place for you in no time.
