Why Criminal Justice Careers are Perfect for Military Veterans

December 12, 2017 by Tim McMahon

Most people who join the military only serve for a short amount of time. Once they have honored their commitment, many search for new careers. Veterans gain important skills throughout their service, which can be great assets in the workplace. One particularly promising choice is working in the field of criminal justice. There are certain aspects of these careers that blend very well with military experience. Here are a few reasons why a position in criminal justice may be a perfect fit.

Commitment to Serve & Protect

One of the core values of military veterans is the desire to protect our country’s rights and freedom. Our military takes great pride in its commitment to keeping citizens safe. For veterans, there is a sense of duty that does not fade over time. Fortunately, this is a vow that is also shared by the criminal justice system. Whether out in the field or working behind the scenes, you would be a part of upholding the law, which is a huge part of preserving our democracy.

Familiar with Protocol

Because of their service, veterans are accustomed to structure and regulations when performing their job. Following rules makes it easier to meet expectations. A career in criminal justice provides the opportunity to continue to work under strict guidelines. Aside from enforcing the law, there are procedures for every step within the system. No matter which area you choose, your responsibilities to the job and the public will be clear.

Experience That is Appreciated

While there are more than a few reasons for veterans to pursue these careers, it should be noted that on the flip side, the criminal justice system wants employees with military experience as well. They recognize the scope of your abilities because of your service. Of course, there are positions that require candidates to continue their education. If you do not have time to attend a traditional university, you might consider an alternative like an online master’s degree in criminal justice to give you a leg up on getting this type of position.

Serving and protecting this country is extremely honorable. However, the calling does not necessarily stop with the military. Thanks to the advancements in technology, there are several career options available within the criminal justice system. This gives veterans an opportunity to follow a familiar path, while also trying something new and exciting. If you are not sure about where to begin, you can conduct a search online or speak with someone in local law enforcement. Learning as much as possible will help with this decision.
