Some people are naturally self-starters, with the innate ability to work well independently and get work done without being asked. If you are one of these people and prefer working alone, it is logical to choose a career that lets you self-start. Here are four options.
Social Media Manager/Public Relations Specialists
Social media manager is a good job for a self-starter interested in tech. This job can easily be done remotely and is in high demand due to businesses increasingly using social media platforms as a primary method of marketing and outreach. These professionals manage a brand’s social media channels by creating posts, responding to comments and replying to instant messages. They must understand and keep up with changes to the algorithms social media platforms use. According to Indeed.com “The average salary for a Social Media Manager is $49,055 per year in the United States. Salary estimates are based on 1,299 salaries submitted anonymously to Indeed by Social Media Manager employees, users, and collected from past and present job advertisements on Indeed in the past 36 months. The typical tenure for a Social Media Manager is less than 1 year.”
A closely related profession is Public Relations Specialist and according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Public relations specialists create and maintain a favorable public image for the organization they represent… typically need a bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, English, or business… The median annual wage for public relations specialists was $60,000 in May 2018.”

Writer
Writing is known as a solitary profession for a good reason. Most writers work alone and need to possess the self-discipline to create content and meet deadlines. Many people assume writers don’t make much money but that actually isn’t true. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that writers make an average of $62,170 per year. The Internet and digital channels have created new opportunities for writers to create content and get paid for it.
Welder
If you are looking for a job that doesn’t require a college degree and involves more “hands-on” activity. You might enjoy working as a welder. There are a variety of different types of welding including:
- MIG – Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
- TIG – Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
- Stick – Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
- Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
- Oxy-Acetylene Welding
- Spot Welding
Welders typically work alone to create or repair metal parts by combining two separate pieces together. Some are self-employed while most work in the manufacturing sector. Unlike many other jobs that pay well, becoming a welder does not require a college degree. All you need is a high school diploma and some additional technical training to get started. Welders should have the appropriate equipment to do their jobs, such as a TIG welder. According to Indeed “The average salary for a welder is $17.95 per hour in the United States.” But different types of welders can ear different salaries. Tig welders earn an average of $18.73 /hr. While companies like Universal Group and SpaceX are currently paying highly experienced Welders $30-$40/hr.
Accountant
Individuals who are good with numbers may be well-suited to a job as an accountant or auditor. Their job is to create, maintain and examine financial records for organizations or individuals as well as handle taxes. They work with either private clients or executives at an organization to maintain an accurate picture of finances and may offer advice regarding financial management. Because accountants and auditors spend much of their time working alone, they must be good self-starters to ensure their work gets completed. The median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $70,500 in May 2018.
While most jobs require you to heavily interact with other people, some are better for individuals with more introverted personalities who are natural self-starters. All of the roles outlined above fit into that category. They pay well too and might be good choices for you.
