Ever since 2008, government officials have been scrambling to put the economy back together, and it’s hard for someone without work to find a place for themselves within the chaos. The world has changed; products that were once the hallmark of American civilization are no longer in demand, and if they are, they’re shipped from another country. We’ve become a mostly service-based economy with millions of people that need jobs and few openings for them to fill.

Despite this, it’s a time of unparalleled opportunity. New niches are being created, new technologies are being introduced, and it’s never been easier to educate yourself, whether it’s through school or self-study, or starting your own business. A few years ago, I was part of a panel of supposedly successful people speaking to a room packed with about a thousand college seniors.

Our topic: how to be successful.

When it was my turn, I asked the students: “How many of you want to be successful?” Every hand in the room shot up.

I then asked: “Who can tell me what success is?” Not a single hand in the room was raised. “If you don’t know what success is,” I asked the students, “then how are you going to get there?”

This is the dilemma facing many people I meet today. They desperately want to be “successful.” But when you ask them what that would mean, they either can’t give you a definitive answer, or they say it would be becoming a millionaire.
