3 Ways to Afford Medical Treatment When You’re Between Jobs

July 1, 2020 by Tim McMahon

In the midst of COVID-19, it’s safe to say that having appropriate healthcare coverage is a must. But with so many people finding themselves laid off or unemployed, paying monthly insurance premiums can quickly become impossible for many people.

As dire as the situation seems, there are ways to get the medical attention you deserve. Since most people look for ways to cut corners, health insurance may be the first thing to go. Read on to learn three ways to afford medical treatment when you’re in between jobs.

Medical Treatment

COBRA Coverage

COBRA coverage is a specific type of health insurance that kicks in when someone has been laid off from work. This coverage offers additional coverage for a period up to 36 months. Because the cost of COBRA can be expensive, most employers will shoulder the cost for their employees. Note, not every employer participates in the COBRA program, so check with your employer as soon as possible.

Medicaid

If you’re not eligible for COBRA, you can still apply for Medicaid. Briefly, Medicaid is a government-run program that offers medical coverage for people who are unemployed or have little. The eligibility requirements are outlined under state and federal guidelines. Medicaid and Medicaid dental services are both funded by the locally and on and federal level.

Under the Medicaid program, you’ll receive treatment for teeth restoration, tooth extractions and regular maintenance. In addition, dental services rendered under Medicaid must meet specific standards that are set forth under the program. However, if Medicaid doesn’t meet these standards, then you may have to pay out of pocket for dental care.

Tiered Payment Plans

If you aren’t eligible for Medicaid and don’t want to participate in COBRA, you should inquire about a tiered payment program with your physician or dentist. Especially during this period, most doctors are willing to work with patients to get them the medical care they need. Have an honest conversation with your doctor about what’s going on. Let them know how much you can pay upfront and how much you can afford if there is a remaining balance.

Your health should never be taken for granted. Even if you’re in good health, you still need regular physicals and dental care. If you find yourself without the appropriate coverage while in between jobs, use the above-mentioned tips to acquire proper coverage. Most importantly, focus on keeping you and your family as healthy as possible by practicing preventative care at home as much as possible.
