Turning Unemployment to Success

December 18, 2020 by Guest Contributor

Beautiful Stories

We’re going through a difficult year, what with the COVID-19 pandemic, the election, and everything happening in-between. However, one of the key effects of this year is the massive spike in unemployment, although it has mitigated somewhat in recent months.

If you or someone you love is unemployed, then you’ll already know how bad it can make you feel, whether that comes in the form of shame, guilt, or anxiety and stress. However, just because you’re unemployed now, that doesn’t mean you’ll be unemployed forever, and you may even be more successful than you’ve ever been before.

Here are some real-life stories that will show you what I mean.

JK Rowling

JK Rowling’s story is one of the more well-known stories of rejection and triumph. At the start of her career, she had no job, was a single parent, and described herself as being ‘as poor as it is possible to be poor in the UK without being homeless.’ She was living on welfare and would often go without dinner so she could feed her children.

Her first manuscript for Harry Potter was rejected 12 times by publishers, and it turns out that the 13th publisher only read it because his 8-year-old daughter was reading it and couldn’t put it down. Now when you look at where the Harry Potter world is now, it’s incredible to see what a journey it has taken.

Jim Carrey

You may have heard of Jim Carrey and his seemingly crazy outlook on life and the universe in general, or you may simply know him as being the lead star of some of your favorite modern comedies and skits. Still, Jim hasn’t always been such an integral part of the spotlight.

Always wanting to be an actor, he was rejected throughout the start of his career from massive opportunities, including Saturday Night Live, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Legend, Back to School, Edward Scissorhands, and many more. Now he’s a household name all over the world.

Ricky Gervais

Love him or hate him, Ricky Gervais is one of the most popular comedians, writers, and actors in the world right now and has been hailed for producing some of the most mesmerizing content of our generation. However, success hasn’t always been at the forefront of his life.

“During his early years, he was a failed singer and an unsuccessful manager and was made redundant from his radio show job back in 1998. He then took his friend from the radio show, Stephen Merchant, and created The Office, which became the most popular British sitcom of all time,” shares Mary Taylor, a marketer at Last minute writing and Research papers UK.

Walt Disney

Disney really is a name that needs no introduction and is by far one of the largest entertainment networks in the world, if not the biggest, and there are endless children around the world who have grown up with Disney being such a massive part of their lives. Some people even form their identity around their love for Disney and its beautiful characters.

However, as you can probably guess based on the rest of this article, things didn’t start out so smoothly.

“Walt Disney, the creator of Disney, originally chose to enlist in the army at the age of 16 but was rejected for being too young. This was just the start of a long list of rejected projects and ventures. Two years on, he started to work on his drawings and created caricatures of political figureheads, but his style never caught on. He was eventually fired by his editor for ‘having no good ideas’ and ‘lacking imagination.’” Explains Jason Cree, a business writer at Writinity and Draft beyond.

Imagine being that editor now.

He then wanted to turn the story of Snow White into a feature-length movie, which was ridiculed by critics and known as ‘Disney’s folly.’ With Disneyland (after movies had started to be released), he went bankrupt five times before he was really able to get it to work. Even his original concepts for Mickey Mouse were rejected as they would ‘terrify women’ who saw them.

Eventually, Disney’s hard work started to pay off, and he became the powerhouse that he is known for being today. With 22 Academy Awards and 59 nominations, he is the most acclaimed writer, artist, and producer in all of human history.

Angela Douglas is a young entrepreneur from Connecticut who has founded her own showroom at the age of 21. Currently she practices business coaching at Research paper writing service and Gum essays and gives consultations to beginning startupers. Angela enjoys traveling and meditation.
