Considering Starting a Salon Business?

May 13, 2021 by Guest Contributor

So, you’ve decided to finally take the plunge. You’ve gotten your certifications, you’ve gotten some experience, and now you’re ready to open your own hair salon. It’s time to follow your dream. The first thing you’ll need is a space. Check available retail space in your area and see if there are any for lease. You want to be in an area with a lot of foot traffic to be able to draw in your customers more easily. Once you have your building, the real work is set to begin. Here are some things you’ll need in order to get your salon up and running.

Salon Stations

The first and most important thing you’ll need to set up is the salon stations themselves. You’ll need plenty of mirrors, swivel chairs, and workstations for your employees. Your employees must have enough space to keep their salon equipment. Keeping your equipment organized will help prevent your salon from looking too cluttered. In addition, utilizing quality supplies tells your customers that you care about your business.

Shampoo Bowls

Most salons offer hair washing in addition to the cut and style. You’ll need a bowl for hair washing and shampooing, as well as some reclining chairs to make the hair washing process easier. If your salon is more female-focused, you may want to invest in some hairdryers so that your customers with long hair can have it dried quickly and efficiently.

Appliance Holders/Various Appliances

For each of your employees’ workstations, you’ll need some appliance holders so they can organize their setup neatly. These holders can hold blow-dryers, scissors, hair products, and various other things. Styling hair often requires a lot of different equipment, so it is important that your employees are able to easily access what they need.

Towel Warmers and Sterilizers

Most salons and barbershops offer a hot, pressed towel after the cut and style. A towel warmer is crucial to meet the customers’ comfort and expectation. A sterilizer helps to keep the towels clean so customers stay happy and healthy when getting their haircut at your salon or barbershop.

Waiting Room/Financials

You’ll need a front desk with some kind of computer system. Many salons now have tablets for the front with a card swiping mechanism. If you’re accepting cash, you’ll need a cash drawer as well. You’ll probably also want to grab a coffee table and a few chairs to set up a waiting area in the front of your store. You want your potential guests to be comfortable while waiting to enhance the whole experience.

Will you be providing any other services?

If you plan to branch outside of hair and provide things like nail services, you’ll need to make sure you have those bases covered as well. You may need pedicure chairs, manicure stations, and even things like drying lamps to make sure you have everything covered.

Be sure that you have all of the supplies you need before you open your business. Buying quality equipment for your salon will help keep your customers happy. In addition, your employees will be more satisfied with their jobs if they have a way to keep their supplies organized.
