Tips For Making Yourself More Employable

December 5, 2019 by Tim McMahon

If you’re getting interviews but no offers in today’s low unemployment environment something needs to change. Here are some tips to make you more employable.

Work On Your Interview Technique

It can take hard work, effort and stepping out of your comfort zone, but this is what you have to do to make yourself more employable. You may know you can do the job but there is more to it than skill and unfortunately it is necessary to be able to present yourself appropriately in the eyes of others. And hopefully, this will put you on the path to happiness in a career that interests you.

One of the biggest reasons that people struggle to land a job is their interview technique. This is understandable because it is a highly stressful situation and one which causes many people to feel overly anxious. This is why you need to practice your technique, read advice online, prepare for each interview and always ask for feedback.

Network Constantly

It is a smart idea to constantly be networking when you are looking for work, particularly if you have your heart set on a specific industry. This should include attending industry events and networking on helpful platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook and Reddit. The more people that you know, the more likely it is that an opportunity will arise somewhere. It is helpful if you have a professional website that you can direct people to which will contain information on your background, skillset, and goals.

Develop Key Skills

Many people struggle to find work because they lack the skills that are required to succeed in the industry. You may need industry-specific skills, but it is often the lack of soft skills that hold people back. This is why it is worth looking into training from specialists who can help individuals to develop their communication, leadership and networking skills so that you can thrive in any business setting.

One of the key skills you need to develop is a positive attitude. ToniVans of  www.tonivans.com says “Be Honest With You!” which means that you need to be honest with yourself and not be so critical. You wouldn’t let other people talk to you like you talk to yourself.  “Let’s be honest, what are we telling ourselves all the time in the mirror?… We always say to ourselves, “I’m not good enough.” Right?… We’re our own worst self-critic… Everything that you are telling yourselves, every time you overthink, every time you look at what is not going right, you’re going to attract more of that into your life… I don’t care if you’re in a crappy mood, I don’t care if you’re in a mediocre mood, I don’t care if you’re doing the Eyore dance. What are the five things going right for you? I want you to take those five things, write them down where you can see them every day and stick them up on your bathroom mirror. “

Nobody wants to hire Eyore so don’t be him!

Gain Experience

There is a frustrating catch-22 when looking for work because many places require that you have experience which is, of course, problematic if you do not have any. This is why you need to get any experience that you can whether this is working in a freelance capacity for a time, volunteering, taking on an internship or anything else which might help you to get your foot in the door. All of these activities also put you in a place to meet other people in the industry. If you are a hard worker with a good attitude they will see that and before long an opportunity will present itself. If you are stuck at home playing video games you won’t meet anyone who could possibly further your career. They aren’t going to show up banging on your door but if they get to know you in another environment you never know what might come of it.

Persistence Pays

It is hard to keep on applying for jobs when you don’t succeed, which often leads people to go into interviews with a defeatist attitude, which turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Try to stay positive, believe in yourself and find ways to stay happy and focused throughout your job search – you will get there in the end with perseverance. One of the key factors of success in any endeavor is persistence. The old story about Edison trying 10,000 things before he finally found a good light bulb filament is true. Imagine where we would be if he had given up after a few hundred or even a couple of thousand!

Job hunting is tough and only becomes harder the longer that it goes on. If you are struggling to land a job then you may want to look at the above areas, all of which can help someone to become more employable.
