What Qualities Do You Need for a Career in Political Marketing?

June 2, 2021 by Tim McMahon

The world of politics is known for being ruthless, fickle, and incredibly stressful. While many people would run the other way from this career path, but, there are those who embrace the challenge, the excitement, and the possibility of ushering in real change. Perhaps you don’t like the idea of being a political figure but still want to be involved in politics. Perhaps you’d like a career where you get to remain behind the scenes? Then perhaps political marketing is the field for you.

What is Political Marketing?

Political marketing is a key component of politics. Every politician needs a political marketer from Presidents to members of local governments.  Market research is used to decide on policies, to understand what the people they serve want. Voter profiling helps decide which segments to target and what political brand is necessary to attract that segment of the population. Internal marketing provides volunteer involvement, etc.

With that said, it takes more than just an interest in politics to succeed in political marketing. There are some specific qualities that can help you to excel in this career path and really make your mark. So, let’s take a look at the qualities needed to be a successful political marketer.

Be Extremely Digital Savvy

In today’s highly reliant digital world, it is absolutely imperative that you have digital skills. This means you can easily find your way around the computer, and some rather specific software and tools that can help you to be more effective in your job. Tatango marketing software is designed for political marketers and is easy to use, but digital savviness is always helpful.
While these sorts of software and tools can seem intimidating at first, the fact is that they will make your job easier, more seamless, and can help you to be more effective so they cannot be ignored.

Be Fluent in Social Network Marketing

Here’s another digital-based skill that is perhaps one of the most important qualities to possess in political marketing. Social networks have become one of the main sources of communication between politicians and the public, so you need to be able to know how to leverage that fact and ensure the politician you are representing has a strong and positive showing on all platforms. It is more than just posting regular content, it’s about engagement and making sure the message is always clear.

Excellent Research and Writing Skills are Required

Then there are your research and writing skills, which need to be top-notch. Some of the writing that may be required of you includes social media posts, press releases, statements, and speeches. You need to understand how to write clear and concise messaging that is always “on-brand” and matches up with the party and the political candidate.

Strong, Confident, and Outgoing Personalities Tend to Do Well

There are also going to be some basic personality traits that help to make you a more effective political marketer. These include being strong, confident, and outgoing. You will often be the point-person for your candidate so you need to have the confidence to speak with other politicians, donors, the press, and of course the public.

Listening Skills Will Also Be Important

Then we have listening skills, which are a skill that will help you to succeed in the majority of jobs. You need to be able to hear what people are saying to you and fully absorb that messaging. They also need to feel as though they are being heard and understood.

Setting Yourself Up for Success

So, as you look towards a career in political marketing, these are the kinds of skills that can help set you up for success.
