Industries Begging for Applicants

November 15, 2019 by Tim McMahon

It often feels like the job market is stagnant. You can send out hundreds of applications and never hear anything back. If you’re looking for a job, though, you might do better by looking into these four fields that are begging for new applicants.

Education

There is a definite shortage of teachers in the United States, with some schools turning towards long-term subs just to fill gaps in their scheduling. Depending on the school district, there are even bonuses offered for teachers in hard-to-recruit subjects like Math. While teachers have significant workloads, the field is fairly stable and there are plenty of chances to move within districts and even to new locations. This is one career that’s sure to be around for many years to come, but applicants are still in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median salary for a high school teacher was $60,320 in 2018. Middle School teachers made $58,600/ yr. and Kindergarten and Elementary School Teachers averaged $57,980 / yr.

Truck Driving

Trucks are what keep America moving. There’s a degree of reliance on long-haul trucks that most people don’t understand, but it’s clear to see that the demand is still there for skilled drivers. There’s such high demand for CDL Truck Driver Positions, in fact, that there are constant efforts by major companies to not only recruit skilled drivers but to provide free training for those who are interested in licensure. Despite forecasts of gloom by proponents of self-driving vehicles, there are still plenty of driving jobs that need to be filled today. According to the BLS Heavy and Tractor-trailer Truck Drivers earned an average of $43,680/yr. while Delivery Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers earned $30,500/yr.

Agriculture

America was once a primarily agricultural nation, with most of its population working on farms. These days, though, it’s nearly impossible to find a farm that isn’t looking for help. Farms need workers, supervisors, and even people to take over long-running operations. With many family farms now looking to sell because of a lack of interest expressed by younger generations, if you like nature and working outside there is an opportunity to get into the agriculture business. The median annual wage for farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers was $67,950 in May 2018.

Healthcare

The fasting growing field in the United States is healthcare. As the population continues to age, the number of jobs available for doctors, skilled nurses, and technicians is skyrocketing. Hospitals are constantly recruiting for individuals in almost every position, and competition is getting fierce for experts in the field. Occupational and Physical Therapists are also in incredibly high demand, especially as more and more people begin to understand the benefits of that type of treatment.

There are still plenty of fields looking for new applicants. Whether you want to drive a truck, teach in a school, take care of people or grow crops, there are jobs out there for you. Don’t get discouraged with your lack of success so far – you may have just been looking in the wrong fields.
